About Evening with Champions

For thirty seven years, the Evening with Champions figure skating show which takes place each October in Cambridge Massachusetts, has been a benefit for the Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. In recent years, performers have included Oksana Baiul, Emily Hughes, Matt Savoie, Belbin and Agosto, Matthews and Zavozin, Ilia Kulik and Ekaterina Gordeeva. For most of the past 20 years, Paul Wylie has been the host (and sometimes even skates), and the Protopopovs, who won the 1964 and 1968 Olympics, skate a pairs routine. They have skated at every Evening with Champions for 37 years!

Each year, students at Harvard's Eliot House develop and manage the show, which involves not only talented local figure skaters of all ages, but also top national and international skating champions. The Evening of Champions web site says, "Students organize all aspects of the exhibition, from ticket sales to backstage setup. And the students contribute more than just their time: During the weekend of the performance, members of Eliot House yield their beds and their rooms to the guest skaters, who can thereby reside comfortably only minutes away from the skating rink. Most importantly, the students stay in touch with the children of Dana-Farber, to whom An Evening with Champions is ultimately committed."

Every year in August, the list of performers is posted, and tickets for Evening of Champions ice show go on sale. Ticket buyers may even buy reception tickets, which entitles them to not only a late buffet dinner, but also a chance to talk to the skaters, take pictures, and collect autographs.
