About Sarah HughesBorn May 2, 1985 in Great Neck, New York, unassuming Sarah Hughes won the gold medal in ladies figure skating at the 2002 Winter Olympics, although she was not expected to perform better than either Michelle Kwan or Sasha Cohen. Previous wins included the 1998 World Junior Championships, and in 2001, the bronze medal in both the World Championships and the he Grand Prix figure skating competitions.
While training and competing as a skater, Sarah Hughes
was also preoccupied with family concerns - her mother's
ultimately successful struggle with breast cancer.
Since her Olympics win, Sarah stopped competing and turned pro,
while alsodevoting herself to her studies at Yale University,
and supporting her sister, Emily Hughes, 2006 U.S.
bronze medalist in figure skating.
