About Ekaterina Gordeeva (Katia)Ekaterina Gordeeva (Katia) was born May 28, 1971 in Moscow, Russia. Skating since she was four years old, she began pairs skating with Sergei Grinkov at the age of 11, soon winning the Juniors World Figure Skating Championships and then the Senior World Championships. She and Sergei Grinkov won the gold medal for pairs figure skating at the 1988 Winters Olympics, fell in love, married each other in 1991, had their daughter Daria in 1992, and won another gold medal in pairs at the 1994 Olympics. Their skilled and elegant skating performances attracted many fans.
On November 20, 1995 Sergei Grinkov died of a heart attack while
training for an ice skating performance with Katia. In spite of her deep grief, Katia was soon
skating by herself, and participating in Stars on Ice and other
skating shows as a singles ladies skater. In 1998, Katia began
dating fellow Russian and 1998 Olympics figure skating champion Ilia Kulik.
In 2001, she gave birth to their daughter, Elizaveta. Katia and
Ilia were married June 10, 2002. |
