Gregory and Pethukov, Ice Dance

Melissa Gregory was born May 22, 1981 near Chicago; Denis Petukhov, October 6, 1978 in Kirov, Russia. Amazingly, this talented ice dancing team, who married only six months after meeting each other, met through email correspondence when looking for compatible ice dance partners. Denis Petukhov flew to the U.S. from Russia to meet Melissa and try out a skating partnership, and didn't return to Russia.

According to Melissa, "Our first trial was quite interesting, since he didn't speak English and I didn't speak Russian. But we managed to do our little sign language. I can't tell you the feeling when we first skated together. This was it."

In August 2000, Gregory and Pethukov officially became ice dance partners, and six months later, in February 2001, they married. By 2003, they had won a bronze medal at the U.S. Nationals Figure Skating Championships, followed by silver in 2004, 2005, and 2006. In February 2006, the year after Denis became a U.S. citizen, they represented the U.S. at the Winter Olympics, where they placed 14th in ice dance.

Gregory and Pethukov continue to compete, and also to appear in figures skating shows, especially in the northeastern U.S. For several years, they trained in Newington, Connecticut and were coached by Nikolai Morozov and Shae Lynn Bourne. However, as of spring 2006, they are training at the University of Delaware, with coaches Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karpnosov. Melissa is also once again a brunette ...no longer the blonde photographed here in late 2004.
